Description

Product description: U3V40F5 - 5V 4A step-up converter - Pololu 4012

Pololu brand step-upconverter with an output voltage of 5 V and a capacity of 4 A. The supply voltage ranges from 1.3 V to 5 V (the starting voltage is 2.7 V). Typical inverter efficiency ranges from 90% to 95%, depending on input voltage and load. The module has temperature protection; when the temperature threshold is exceeded, it will shut down.

5 V / 4 A step-up converter pinouts.
Outputs of the step-up converter module

The step-up converter has four pin-outs in the form of six 2.54 mm solder holes.

  • EN - pin to disable the system when the voltage is below 0.4 V, system on by default: 30 kΩ resistor pulled up from EN to VIN.
  • VIN - input voltage from 2.7 V to 9 V (after starting up the chip, the input voltage may be at least 1.3 V).
  • GND - system ground (common for VIN and VOUT).
  • VOUT - output voltage 9 V.
Hazardous voltage pulses

When power is applied to the module, dangerous, short-lived high amplitude eclectic impulses (so-called pins) may appear, which can permanently damage the system. Pololu's tests show that for input voltages above 11 V pins can have amplitude large enough to damage the module. To protect against this undesirable phenomenon it is recommended to solder a capacitor of at least 33 uF as close as possible to the pins supplying the converter.

System efficiency

Efficiency is defined as the ratio of output power to input power (power out)/(power in). It is a very important parameter in the case of work with portable sources of energy (batteries and accumulators), where the time of work on one charging cycle counts. The efficiency of this circuit is from 90% to 95%. The output current depends on the input voltage and the system load.
